ELP will be celebrating its 14th anniversary by holding its annual exhibition at Forman’s Smokehouse Gallery on Fish Island in HackneyWick. Over 50 artist printmakers will be exhibiting their latest work in this exciting gallery which overlooks the London Olympic Stadium. It is unusual for ELP to have a theme for its annual shows but it has been decided to make an exception this year in view of the stunning location of the venue and the unique occasion.
The exhibition will be opened by Simon McCarthy,Waterman to Her Majesty the Queen and Doggett’s Coat and Badge Winner. The Queen’s Watermen are the closest guard to the crown, dating back to the time when palaces were on the River Thames and the only way to transport the sovereign was on the river. The Doggett’s Coat and Badge is the prize and name for the oldest rowing race in the world, first raced in 1715 and contested annually to this day.
East London Printmakers is a group of artist printmakers based in Hackney in London’s east end. The studio has an exciting mix of artist members: from art school graduates and university tutors to self taught printmakers – all working with print as a contemporary medium for realisation of their ideas. The collective runs a spacious and modern printmaking studio providing open access facilities and workshops for the local community. It also organises exhibitions and events for the benefit of its members. ELP has put together numerous, successful exhibitions over the years, most recently at the Freud Museum, London, Space Studios Hackney and the V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green. The Studio’s annual edition of a box set of prints is held in the print collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in South Kensington. The latest 2011 Box will be launched at the exhibition.
